How to test a perfume before buying a bottle?
Trying a perfume on a blotter in a shop isn't enough. Here is the complete method for properly assessing a fragrance before you invest.
Why testing in a shop isn't enough
A fragrance unfolds in three acts: the top note (0–15 min), the heart (15 min to 3 h) and the base (3 h+). An impression in a shop only captures the top note.
The complete method for testing a perfume
Apply 2 to 3 sprays to your wrist. Don't rub. Wait 10 minutes before smelling. Wear the perfume for 3 to 5 consecutive days to see how it evolves.
The decant: the essential tool
A 5ml decant gives you 2 to 3 weeks to test it properly. Find everything about our perfume decanting, or our discovery sets to test several fragrances at the same time.
